The Holidays May Be Over, But the Fun is Just Getting Started!

After another great day of skiing and riding at beautiful Ragged Mountain, we're looking forward to heading into today with lower temps and sunny skies. Conditions are fantastic right now, and if you make it up, there are plenty of great turns to be had. What better way to work off those holiday cookies than with a few extra runs?!

If you're still on vacation, be sure to take advantage of the week ahead, as temperatures are expected to be favorable and there's even a chance we could see a few flurries during the day tomorrow. We know you college students are likely still on break for another couple of weeks, so be sure to take advantage of our College Cut deal. For just $39 dollars, you can come shred with us, Sunday through Friday! Be sure you bring your current student ID with you when you come visit.

The temperatures should be in the mid 20's which is perfect conditions for our snowmakers to get set and start back up. A light breeze is anticipated throughout the day today which will only make it easier for our snowguns to blanket the hill. Keep your eyes peeled for snowmakers on Upper Exhibition, Town Meeting, and Birches, and be sure to say thank you when you do!

Snowmaking Has Resumed!

*UPDATE*

Both the Spear Quad and Ragged Mountain Express lifts are on wind hold. If you are planning to ski or ride today we are happy to offer a lower mountain ticket for $20, which provides access to the Barnyard Triple and both Carpets.

Snowmaking resumed last night across Ragged Peak, with the intent to fill in a few more trails to help connect some of the dots, like Sunnyside, Upper Crew Cut, and Pines. At the same time the team is looking to add a bit more coverage to both Newfound Ridge and Village Green. They’ll be working hard once again this week, so if you see a Snowmaker make sure to thank them!

2 Inches To Help Refresh!

A nice little refresh was granted to us last night by Mother Nature, who dropped a new 2” of snow across Ragged. The temps will also drop tonight allowing Snowmaking to pick back up and spread some more across the lower portions of Ragged. The plan right now is to do some resurface work on Ragged Peak providing a bit more coverage to Newfound and Village Green. They will also be working to connect the dots by finishing off Lower Chutte, and adding Pines, Sunnyside, and Upper Crew Cut. This, along with pushing out Showboat and Showoff, will certainly make for another great weekend of skiing ahead of us!

The Groomers Are Getting Things Ready

*UPDATE* Both Upper Ridge and Headwall will be open today!

The past 24hrs have seen a shift from snowmaking to grooming on Upper Ridge, Lower Ridge, Barnyard and Headwall. The groomers has been working their blades and will be dropping the tillers soon to get those trails open for some fresh turns on Saturday morning!

In the meantime, snowmaking is planning their next move to Spear Peak as temps stay favorable into next week. We’ll keep updating as the team works their magic!

For conditions right now, the snow is fast and grippy. Perfect for early season leg conditioning. Set those edges and ride them through to your next turn. Get your balance points right and be ready for the next big storm!

Speaking of edges… Just a friendly reminder that if your gear needs some love, go talk to Eddie or Kyle in the Ragged Edge Tuning and Repair shop. They can get your board or skis back in shape so you can fully enjoy this amazing start to the season. But, they can also do some pretty amazing repairs, so if you have that unfortunate stop in the woods they can help. Go stop in and say hi, they’re right down in the rental department.

We’ll see you on the mountain!

More Terrain Opening This Weekend!!!

WOW!!! What a few days of cold means here at Ragged is tons of great production from the Snowmaking team. They’ve been at it around the clock since Monday night and the piles are really starting to build across Ragged Peak and in the Barnyard area.

This team is a group of unsung early season heroes. If you see one, throw them a thank you, give them a high five, and let them know how much their hard work means to you.

This weekend it looks like we will be skiing and riding on Upper Ridge, Headwall, Lower Chute, and Barnyard because of this team’s hard work.

We'll see you on the mountain!

Snowmaking is Cranking!

Snowmaking has been driving hard the past couple of nights with these cold temps and production is looking good! If you’re out skiing or riding and see one of the snowmakers, stop and say thanks!

The cold temps are helping us see through to the goal of adding more terrain this weekend. We hope to add Lower Ridge, Upper Ridge, Headwall, and Barnyard this weekend, providing more terrain for all guests!

As a friendly reminder, please remember that if you purchased a season pass and have yet to pick it up, pick up is now in the new Guest Service’s building. It’s the grey building in between the Meeting House and Elmwood Lodges. You will see a big orange awning that says Guest Services on it! Please also remember that there is a one-time $5 RFID card fee. Learn more about RFID HERE.

We'll see you on the mountain!

Cold Temps Are Back

And that means that the snowmakers are out there earning their keep! With last nights shift in temperature the snowmaking system roared back to life with a focus to increase man-made coverage by this weekend. Currently the goal is to see Lower Ridge, Upper Ridge, Headwall, and Barnyard open providing more terrain for all guests!

This new cold front came with a price though as the warm temps melted some of our natural snow pack. Patrol has closed all natural terrain due to the freeze thaw cycle it saw in the past 24 hours.

If you were joined us this past weekend, we hope you made your way into the Stone Hearth Bar were we've increased some of our great food and beer offerings. If not, go grab lunch and try one of the tasty flat breads in Stone Hearth. Try the Snowmaker (in honor of the cold temps and hard work being done!) and pair it with a Ragged Red from the Flying Goose Brewery... So Good!

We'll see you on the mountain!

Monday, Monday - a 'Spring Like' Day!

Yesterday’s mixed precipitation had less of an impact on conditions than we anticipated allowing us to maintain the same trail count as we started with of 28 trails. With today’s forecast of sunny skies and warmer temps, it will be a beautiful day for getting a few runs in!

As the temperature begins to drop towards the end of today, our mountain operations team will be firing back up the guns with the goal of increased terrain open for this coming weekend. Keep an eye on the SLOPE REPORT for the most up to date info.

A few helpful notes on what to expect with conditions:

- We're looking at all ungroomed terrain having anywhere from 1 foot to over 3 feet of natural snow. This means that all ungroomed terrain can have thin spots, may have exposed water bars, and are best suited to expert skiers and riders. Please use your best judgement when entering an ungroomed trail, even though it may be a Blue Square, it will still pose a higher difficulty today due to conditions.

- Expert skiers and riders, Pels and Sweepstakes are amazing. There is a bunch of snow up top, but as you drop down in the lower sections be aware of some open spots, which may be hidden, and exposed water bars.

- Novice skiers and riders, we are starting with top to bottom groomed terrain for you! Blueberry Patch to Upper Chute to Main Street will be open and groomed and is the easiest way down!

- Intermediate skiers and riders, both Raggae Glades and Moose Alley will be open for those who want to explore the trees on opening day, but want to keep the thrill level within their skill base. It looks great in there, but still please exercise caution with thin cover in areas.

We are very excited to be able to open this much terrain this early in the season, and just ask that you take a steady and cautious approach. Remember to get your skiing and snowboarding legs back, it is still early season.

Mother Nature Is Mixing It Up...

Mother Nature seems to have caught up with herself finally and has decided to change things up a bit. It’s been a blast having all the natural snow in the woods and on some of the ungroomed terrain, but a little bit of mixed precipitation will help to solidify our base, making for what is one of the best early seasons in a long time!

Today’s mixed precipitation might bring with it a few changes to our conditions, so please be aware of any closures. Always check our SLOPE REPORT for the most up to date info.

Happy Opening Weekend!

Well, if you missed opening day, do not fret. Today is going to be just as amazing, if not more. Patrol and Mountain Ops are going forward with our 28 trails that we had open at the end of the day on Friday. And we can attest to the fact that there is a bunch of snow in them woods!

Fall Work Around The Mountain

It’s time for one more installment of “What do you guys do all summer”!

The work around the base area and on lifts has kicked up quite a few notches over the past few weeks. From the work being done to convert the old Discovery Center into our new Guest Services to replacing the wheels on some of lift towers, the Ops team has been quite busy. Check out some of the action from earlier this week as the team installs new Ticket Windows on the Guest Services building, digs a trench for the conduit needed for the Axess RFID Gates, and installs new wheels on the Barnyard Triple.

How We're Working to Improve Your Experience!

Work has begun on building a new Guest Services area in what was known as the Discovery Center. Ticketing, season pass pick-up and general information will all move to the new space better suited to making your experience easier and faster. But, that’s not the only way we’re going to improve tickets and season passes.

The best part for you is Ragged Mountain's new partnership established with Team Axess, a leading manufacturer of ticketing and access management systems based in Austria. Axess currently has roughly 18,000 gates installed worldwide with more than 106 million active RFID cards. Their most notable ski resort installations include Killington, Sugarbush, Alta, and Snowbird, plus our neighbors Gunstock and Mount Sunapee. This partnership with Axess will allow us to more effectively serve you by providing you with a unique, reloadable RFID card granting you access to any lift without the need to stop by Guest Services once you've picked up your card.

Once you've picked up your $5, unique RFID card at Guest Services you can then reload it with everything from a Mission: Affordable season pass, to day tickets, and the new 4 hour flex ticket! It’s all about speeding up the process of getting you from your car to the lift as fast as possible.

Summer Time Maintenance Continues

In another installment of “What do you guys do all summer”!

These past few weeks have been quite active here with work on the lifts. As we’ve previously mentioned each lift has 20% of the chairs removed for the grips to be serviced and rebuilt. Well part of that process includes a NDT or Nondestructive Testing process. This process, which was conducted by Aerial NDT out of Milton, NH, looks for failure points not visible to the human eye in the materials used on the lift. Using ultraviolet lights, magnets, magnaflux solutions, and ultrasounds, the team is able to find any cracks or stress points that could cause a failure. If these are found, the part is placed into retirement and a new part takes its place.

The following photos show the process in practice here at Ragged. Fortunately, no parts were found to have any failures or stresses and we passed our NDT with flying colors. There is a photo of a cracked axle that Aerial NDT brought with them to show how the ultraviolet light and magnaflux solution works to highlight parts that would need to be replaced. There are also a few photos of our lift parts in the wet magnaflux bath, ultrasound testing, and using a high powered, hand-held magnet and dry magnaflux powder.

Terry Gregg - Champion for Children!

Congratulations to Terry Gregg, Learning Center Director here at Ragged Mountain Resort, for being nominated by and awarded the 2018 Champion for Children Award by the Newfound School District. His recognition is a testament to his drive and passion for teaching today’s youth the fundamentals of skiing and snowboarding. His passion for fun is on display each and every day of the week when he and his team of instructors welcome children from multiple different school districts to Ragged. Skiing and Snowboarding for Terry is more than just sliding on snow, it’s a way of life and a chance to smile, laugh, and enjoy the outdoors, something he exemplifies while teaching children.

The Champion for Children Award was established by the New Hampshire School Administrator's Association. It is intended to recognize New Hampshire citizens who have given distinguished public service to benefit children. You can learn more about the Champion for Children Award and the 2018 state recipients HERE

Bebe Wood, the 2018 Ski NH Lifetime Achievement Award Recipient

As she sat, enjoying her Tuckerman’s Pale Ale, Bebe Wood had little clue as to why she was asked to attend the annual Ski New Hampshire conference. But to her surprise she was there to be honored with this year’s Lifetime Achievement Award. Her surprise was shared by all as her loud gasp, upon learning that she was this year’s recipient, was followed by cheers of a crowd who in some way, shape, or form, had all been touched by Bebe and her dedication to sharing our wonderful sport with as many people as possible.

As Ryan Schramm explained in his presentation of the award “Bebe is a true Ski Bum”, having spent her entire life enjoying the sport. Growing up in Marblehead, MA, Bebe and her siblings taught themselves how to ski at a nearby golf course. By the late 30’s she and her sister were making trips to Cranmore, NH and within the next decade Bebe would become a pioneer of the growing counter culture of the “ski bum”. In 1950 Bebe, living in Sun Valley, Idaho was featured as one of the models for a skiing article that ran in a February issue of Life Magazine.

In the early 60’s she and her husband moved to Bristol, NH where they introduced their children to the joys of skiing. In 1965, when Ragged Mountain Resort opened, Bebe was a natural fit as the Director of the Junior Program designed to introduce local school children to the sport. Bebe served as the head of the Courtesy Patrol through the new millennium until her retirement. Today she is still an active member of the Ragged Mountain Resort community as a host on the weekends. Skiers and Riders from all ages and all areas are greeted warmly with a smile and sometimes a hug as they enter the Elmwood Lodge.

A wealth of knowledge both of the mountain and of the industry, Bebe enjoys her role as the mountain’s ambassador of the newly formed Bebe Wood Free Learn to Ski & Ride Program. Named in her honor as a testament to her desire to introduce new folks to this wonderful sport, the Bebe Wood Program has introduced over 2000 people to skiing and riding, completely free of charge, in its first two years of operation.

We are so happy to congratulate Bebe on her award, and couldn’t think of a more fitting person to be recognized as the 2018 Ski NH Lifetime Achievement Award Recipient.

So… What Do You Guys Do During The Summer?

This is a pretty common question we get asked each year, and while there is a lot less activity at the ski area during the summer months, there is still quite a lot that happens.

Catered Events: From weddings to reunions to anniversary parties, we host all kinds of formal catered events. Our team from the winter time shifts focus from group sales and everyday food and beverage service to high level catered events that range from lobster bakes and pig roasts, to 5 course meals. With three different wedding sites, including the summit of Ragged Peak which overlooks the White Mountains and Cardigan Mountain, and our on-site lodging, we host several weekend long Wedding Parties.

Training: The off season is when our year round teams work to ensure we are all trained to handle any kind of issue that might arise. Just this past week we welcomed our good friend Peter Koch, from Memic, a work place safety company we partner with, to work on various rigings and safety techniques when evacuating a staff member from a lift tower.

Events: Hosting events is just one more thing we do over the course of the summer. This year we are very excited to play host to the 2018 USATF 50K Trail National Championships with the good folks from 603 Endurance. The Ragged 75 Stage Race and 50K takes runners up and over the SRKG (Sunapee, Ragged, Kearsarge Greenway) Trail. Starting August 10th, Runners choose from either a 3 day stage race along the entire 75 mile look, or a 50K on Sunday August 12th. Upon completion, a big party is held right here at the base of Ragged Mountain Resort.

Help Us Fight Cancer!

Cancer Sucks.

As most people can attest, that statement rings true all too often. Our team here at Ragged has made it a point to help out with those who are struggling with this horrible disease by supporting the Pedaling for Payson event in Hopkinton, NH on September 15th.

Pedaling for Payson is a bicycle ride (both road and mountain) that raises funds for the Payson Cancer Center at the Concord Hospital. Funds raised go to support the Pedaling for Hope Endowment Fund. This fund largely underwrites the Center's Nurse Navigator Program, which serves to coordinate both the medical treatment and community outreach for the most vulnerable cancer patients.

We would like to extend an invitation to all of our season pass holders and guests to join the Ragged Mountain team this year. Raise money and ride with us as we look to support those dealing with cancer. Register HERE.

PLUS, join us on June 7th for a pre-ride event at the Red River Theater in Concord, NH. This event supports the Pedaling For Payson Ride with a screening of ‘Reveal the Path’, a genre-defying adventure film that contemplates what it means to live an inspired life using the bicycle as a mechanism to explore, dream and discover. Tickets are $10 and include the film, beer tasting from New Hampshire Distributors and Lithermans Limited Brewery, tasty treats from Vibes Gourmet Burgers and O Steaks & Seafood, trivia contests and door prizes.  Learn more HERE.
