Hans Olof Marquadt- J1/J2/J3 Head Coach

Hans has been coaching at Ragged Mountain for the last 7 seasons.  Hans’ strength is custom tailoring the race training for each individual athlete based on their motivation, level of understanding, physical ability and condition.  Using the “athlete centered” teaching model Hans provides clear simple communication that allows each athlete to improve their skills and achieve their best results.  Hans’ love of ski racing -- the snow, weather, environment, camaraderie and the challenge – is infectious!  Many of Hans’ racers have gone on to success in the NH State finals and JO’s.  He is looking forward to continuing that streak this year.

Hans' passion for skiing started in Switzerland at the age of 2.  After moving to the US he was the captain of his high school ski team and worked as a PSIA certified ski instructor at Great Gorge/Vernon Valley in the early 80's.  Hans is also USSA certified.  He continues to travel the world in pursuit of the best runs thus far having skied on 3 different continents.

When not on the slopes he enjoys hiking, cycling, boating and restoring historic homes with his wife (Bunny) and two children (Ingrid and John). Hans and his family live in Milton MA and Alexandria NH.

Liz Bolton- J1/J2/J3

Liz is a senior attending Plymouth State University and majoring in Exercise and Sport Physiology. She has worked at Mount Hood Summer Ski Camps as a counselor and also works on the ski patrol at Ragged. Liz has been skiing since she could stand and has been at Ragged since she was 7. She started racing on the Ragged Ski Team in high school and raced for her college team two years ago. Liz has always had a love for skiing and hopes to share her enthusiasm with her athletes in her second year coaching at Ragged. When there’s no snow to be found, Liz enjoys hiking, camping, surfing, and horse-back riding.

Tom Rohrer- J4

Tom has been coaching at Ragged Mountain for the last four years. His first two years were with the J 5s and his last two years wave been with the J4s. Last year, two of our J4 racers qualified for the New Hampshire State Team (top ten racers in the state). Ragged Mountain was the only team in our division to have any racers on the state team.

Tom grew up in Rochester, New York and raced as a USSA youth at Ski Valley. He qualified in the top ten as a JIII for the New York State Team, was the captain of his high school ski team and raced in college for Georgetown University (not exactly a division I powerhouse in ski racing, but it got him out on the snow). Tom loves being out on the snow (and ice) and can be found skiing any free moment he has.

Tom has two sons and a daughter on the Ragged Mountain Ski Team. In the off seasons, he coaches baseball, and loves to windsurf and wakeboard. Tom is also a dermatologist and will make sure everyone on the team wears sunscreen (SPF 85). Tom is the Chairman of the national Sports Committee in dermatology and is actually working with Olympic Gold (Giant Slalom) and Silver (Downhill and combined) medalist Julia Mancuso in a Public Service Announcement about the importance of sun protection while skiing.

Harlen O'Brien- J4

Harlen worked for the past 5 years as an FIS/IPC level development coach for a UNH based feeder program supplying elite athletes to the US Disabled Ski Team (USDST). Harlen has traveled extensively representing athletes at several NorAms and National FIS/IPC events. This is Harlen’s first year at Ragged Mountain coaching able bodied athletes and is very excited about the prospects of coaching in such a family oriented mountain.

Harlen started skiing at the age of 5. He has worked for a number of ski schools and race program including Gunstock, Sugarbush, Mad River, Lake Louise, Alberta and Sun Shine Village, Alberta. While in Alberta, Harlen coached the equivalent of our USSA J4s in the Canadian Ski Meisters junior race program. In the early 90s Harlen directed Ascutney Mountain’s Alpine race program. Leaving Ascutney in the late 90’s he spent 5 years as director of the NASTAR and civilian race program and founded and ran the TGIF race league at Mt Sunapee. A former PSIA level 3 and current level 200, soon to be level 300 USSA coach and race official, he plans on continuing his coaches development well into the future. In the spring Harlen worked as an alpine coach for the Wounded Warrior Program, VA and DAV to offer disabled veterans a fast track to the USDST which takes place every April at Snowmass Colorado under the current head coach of the USDST, Kevin Jardine.

When he’s not coaching, Harlen enjoys ski racing in local leagues, 4 wheel off roading, wilderness camping, fossil and rock hounding in Canada and astronomy.

Mary Gibbon Stevens- J5

Mary Gibbons Stevens inherited her passion for skiing from her mother who taught her to ski by the age of five. Mary grew up skiing at Mt. Tom in Holyoke, MA and raced for her high school ski team. She is reluctant to admit that her first set of equipment included lace-up boots, cable bindings and bamboo poles. Like her mom, Mary taught her own four children to ski and is now struggling to stay ahead of them on the slopes. Mary taught skiing at Killington, VT and Gunstock, NH before joining the coaching staff at Ragged for the 2009-10 season. She loves to coach the fun and zany 8-10 year olds on our J5 team and to witness their growth and development both on and off the slopes. Mary holds an Alpine Level 2 certification from PSIA.

Ian Martinson- J5

Ashley HoranAshley Horan- J6

Ashley Horan started her racing career at McIntyre Ski Area as a J6. When she was 8, Ashley joined the Ragged Mountain family where she competed on the team until she was 18 (J1).  After several years of casual skiing and volunteering on the race crew, Ashley is excited to coach the J6’s for her second year.  She and hopes to share the skills and passion for ski racing she gained during her own racing career.  While not shredding up the mountain, Ashley works as an accountant and enjoys reading, boxing, bowling, and telemark skiing in her free time.

She also spent 4 years racing at Andover High School before moving on to club level ski racing at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. Growing up in a ski racing family, she has grown to love the camaraderie that ski racing provides as much as the sport itself and looks forward to joining the Ragged Mountain family as a coach for the youth development team. Colleen works as an environmental engineer and when she's not skiing she enjoys dancing, yoga, shopping, and spending time with family and friends.
